Sometimes a truly amateur portfolio of drawings can tell us a a lot about the artist, even if we have no idea who that person was. Here we have an anonymous German portfolio from around 1930 which we have titled Phallische Spiele (Phallic Games), featuring a cast of slim young women and various sizes of male appendages.

Sex was clearly very much on the mind of the creator of these ink and crayon drawings, and we would like to think that she was young, beautiful, imaginative – and fulfilled.

The titles of the drawings are:

  Cirkus (Circus)
  Seiltanz (On the Tightrope)
  Dressur (Training)
  Ausgang (Going Out)
In der Bar (In the Bar)
  Balance (Balance)
Komm mal hierher! (Come Over Here!)
Kleine Spiegelfechtereien: ‘Ob mir das gut steht?’
(Quick Mirror Check: ‘How Does This Suit Me?’)
  Eingeklemmt (Trapped)
  Diavolo (Diabolo)
Was hast du da wieder gemacht? (So You Did it Again?)
Das Flötenspiel der kleinen Marquise (Playing the Little Marquis’s Flute)
  Gross Aufnahme (Big Admission)
Verführung im Bade (Seduction at the Baths)
  Frische Sendung (New Shipment)
Gärtnerin aus Liebe (Gardening for Love)
  Die Überraschung (The Surprise)
  Wäscheleine (Clothesline)
  Die holde Mixerin (Lovely Mixer)
  Phryne (Phryne)

We are very grateful to Hans-Jürgen Döpp for these images; Hans-Jürgen, the compiler of many books on erotic art, curates the Venusberg online gallery and bookshop which you can find here.
