‘Erotic Mythology’ is a generic title given by Marcel Chirnoagă to a range of drawings and engravings based on scenes and themes from classical mythology. They include recognisable characters such as Europa and the Bull and Tanara and the Rhinoceros, astrological subjects like Scorpio and Taurus, and prints with generic titles including Bacchanal, Luxuria – and Sex
When asked in a 1997 interview by his fellow artist Grigore Ilisei what he considered the main purpose of art, Chirnoagă replied ‘The artist must have some strong feelings boiling inside themself. They also need an object for those feelings, a girlfriend or a boyfriend, and they need to know the appropriate grammar, to be convincing and seductive. Grammar in music is musical, in visual arts it is professionalism. Art should be like a love letter.’
