Alexandra von Hellberg’s bookplates, more commonly known among collectors as Ex Libris – Latin for ’from the library’ – display the organic playfulness and grounded physicality of her relationship with the natural world. Birds and sea creatures share a world with angels, mermaids, and happy lovers enjoying their shared joie de vivre
Made mostly between 1998 and 2009, though she does still occasionally produce new artwork, these Ex Libris suggest a semi-autobiographical theme stemming from the artist’s rich imagination. Alexandra von Hellberg succeeds in sharing a vision of sexual desire firmly rooted in the natural world and its physical and spiritual energies.
