Not many of Jean Rustin’s drawings, often preliminary studies for his paintings, appear to have survived, but those that have show his ability to create whole worlds of human experience in just a few well-chosen lines.

We have also included a suite of four related etchings, possibly his only foray into the technique, but powerful and disturbing in their character’s relationship to the viewer, with whom in their different ways they refuse to engage.
