Between 2017 and 2020 Michael Bastow created this mini-series of paintings, in the same format as ‘Seven Ages’, called ‘Unreliable Memories’. It suggests that these are women with whom the artist had various degrees of intimacy in earlier years, now remembered as pictorial, more or less stylised, reminders of those important encounters. They represent the sort of self-exploration that many artists use as a way of harnessing their art to an understanding of who they are and who they have been.
