As the art critic Alena Krtilová has witten in her Výtvarné Město Havířov (Havířov: City of Visual Arts), ‘A special place in Pavel Hlavatý’s work is occupied by eroticism, a fascination with women and their bodies.’ She goes on, ‘Hlavatý’s detailed etchings emphasise the personification of emotions and positive values of human existence and fate, where the artist is a narrator of the various stage of life in all its rawness.’
One of Hlavatý’s trademarks is the main image inside an inner frame, providing both a subject and a colour contrast in his carefully-considered compositions. Many of his etchings, as with the Erotyki I–XI series (numbers 3 to 13 of the selection shown here), have a very specifically erotic focus.
