Austria has quite a reputation for being behind the times when it comes to consorship, and Wiener Blut (Viennese Blood) is Hrdlicka’s graphic diatribe against the restrictive censorship laws in force during the 1970s. In its sixteen plates he highlights many of the seemingly arbitrary distinctions by which ‘pornography’ is defined, using his trademark wit to make important points about what is and what is not considered to be pornographic.

Each plate is accompanied by an explanatory text:

  1   Pornographie? (Pornography?)
  2   Der geschlechtsteillose Geschlechtsverkehr fällt in Österreich nicht unter Pornographie (In Austria sexless intercourse does not count as pornography!)
  3   Eine Fingerbreite trehnt die Keuschheit von der Pornographie! (Chastity is defined by the width of a single finger!)
  4   Am besten Entkräftigt man den Vorwurf pornographischer Manipulation durch die sichtbare Entfernung des Geschlechtsteils (The best way to invalidate the charge of pornographic manipulation is to remove the genitals)
  5   In Wien am Schönsten: zu guter Letzt ein guter Rat: wer das Pornographiegesetz umgehen will bediene sich der Symbole! (The most beautiful in Vienna – here’s some good advice: if you want to circumvent the pornography laws, use symbols!)
  6   Wiener Schule des phantastischen Pornographismus (The Viennese school of fantastic pornography)
  7   Abscheu erregt wer Ärtfremd geht (Disgust arouses those who are aliens)
  8   Die Natur beweist es uns: wer Seinesgleichen liebt, wird nie Anstosz erregen (Nature proves it: whichever loves its own kind will never cause offense)
  9   Tierliebe ist ein Kapitel für sich (Animal love is a law unto itself)
10   Da die Darstellung des Geschlechtsverkehrs als Pornographie Verurteil wird empfiehlt sich die Gestaltung der gleichgeschlechtlichen Liebe (Since the representation of sexual intercourse is condemned as pornography, the depiction of same-sex love is recommended)
11   Muss Pornographie schön sein? (Must pornography be beautiful?)
12   Snow-Business: in Österreich niemals Pornographie!!! (Snow Business: in Austria this isn’t pornography!!!)
13   Pornographie ist immer schön (Pornography is always beautiful)
14   Ab welcher Grössenordnung gilt ein Geschlechtsmerkmal bzw Teil als auf Reizend? (By what order of magnitude is a sexual characteristic or body part considered to be offensive?)
15   Der goldene Winkel, oder wann wird der männliche Akt zur Pornographie? (The golden angle, or when does the male nude become pornography?)
16   Der mit Zensurbacken versehene Geschlechtsteil kommt mit dem Pornogesetz nicht in Konflikt (Censored genitals are not in conflict with the porn laws)

Wiener Blut was published in a limited numbered edition of 250 copies.
