Ink drawings with the judicious addition of watercolour highlights make for some of Uniechowski’s best illustrations, and in this selection he spares no imagination in picturing a wide range of sexual encounters. With some of his drawings it is clear that he sometimes liked to start with a pen and ink sketch, move to a pen and watercolour version, and finally add a full-colour gouache painting to the trio.

Classical scenes, hoofed-and-horned devils, eighteenth-century ballrooms, village festivals, chance hotel encounters, artist-and-model intimacies – everything and anything was grist to Uniechowski’s skilled hand.
