The tales of Jean de la Fontaine, especially the bawdier ones, have always been a rich source of inspiration for erotic illustrators, and this small volume with ten select stories is Collot’s contribution to the genre. As there is no acknowledgement of the artist’s name we cannot be certain that it is his work, but both the subject matter (nuns and priests mostly) and the treatment are very much in his trademark style.

Collot’s etchings are among the most explicit ever produced to accompany la Fontaine’s texts. For ‘La chose impossible’ for example, in which a woman outwits the Devil by challenging him to straighten out a pubic hair, she has no hesitation in showing him all she has.

Dix contes choisis was published anonymously in Paris in a numbered edition of 300 copies.
