The French comic artist Guillaume Berteloot, who uses the pseudonym Hugdebert for his graphic work, grew up in Nantes. The son of an architect, he attended a drawing workshop and evening classes, and at the age of twenty drawing became his professional activity.
His earliest comic productions, like the train journey themed trilogy Voyages-voyages, were rather crude, but his style developed quickly, and by the time he produced Bel-ami, La Maison Tellier and Un amour de Swann in the mid-1990s the drawing and colour treatments were of a high quality. He continued to produce erotic comics under the Hugdebert name into the 2000s, including Les Vénus (1999), Les fleurs du mâle (2003) and Les Vikings (2005).
In 2010 Berteloot joined a group of artists working for Éditions du Triomphe, where he subsequently became a prolific illustrator of historical and military subjects. His work for the publisher includes albums on De Lattre de Tassigny, the Cadets of Saumur, Pope Pius XII, and the first and second world wars, as well as later books on the crusades, Opération Serval, Geneviève de Galard, and General de Monsabert. His most recent book is Le capitaine et l’étendard – Une odyssée du 2e Dragons (The Captain and the Standard – An Odyssey of the 2nd Dragoons) published in 2025, for which he provided both text and illustrations. He is also a regular contributor to La Vie Parisienne.
We are very grateful to our friend Gérard Coron for introducing us to the work of this artist.
