Berteloot’s Kama-Sûtra takes its inspiration from the ancient Indian text traditionally attributed to Vātsyāyana, but turns its teachings into a sequence of exuberantly erotic comic situations. He uses its reputation as a manual of love-making as the starting point for an imaginative catalogue of sexual possibilities, where couples and groups explore the pleasures of seduction, experimentation and physical intimacy.

It gives Berteloot an opportunity to move beyond the predominantly European settings of his earlier work, exploring an idealised world of exotic architecture, elaborate costumes and sensual surroundings, the pages filled with arrangements of bodies that allow him to explore the possibilities of the comic-strip form. The colour adds considerably to the effect.

Kama-Sûtra was published by CAP in the Bédé adult’ series, and subsequently reissued by International Presse Magazine (IPM) in 1999.
