The third and final album in Berteloot's Voyages-voyages series, Les voluptés de l’Orient Express (The Delights of the Orient Express) takes his fascination with railway travel into one of the most famous trains in European cultural imagination. The luxurious compartments of the Orient Express provide an ideal setting for Berteloot’s trademark combination of travel and erotic adventure. As the train crosses Europe, the private spaces of its sleeping compartments and carriages become the scene of a succession of intimate encounters. The contrast between the sophisticated surroundings and the uninhibited behaviour of the passengers is central to the comic’s appeal – beneath the conventions of respectable travel, sexual possibilities are constantly unfolding.
Berteloot’s fascination with trains, already evident in Voyages-voyages, is particularly well suited to the comic form, allowing movement between scenes while maintaining a strong sense of place. Les voluptés de l’Orient Express, deliberately drawn in black and white, makes it a natural companion to La dragueuse des sleeping and Dévergondage à l’est.
Les voluptés de l’Orient Express was published by CAP as a Bédé adult’ album. Some catalogues give a 1991 publication date, but the original CAP edition is dated 1989.
