The second of the three Collot portfolios to appear in rapid succession in 1927 was a set of six prints succinctly entitled Viols, which translates as Rapes or Violations; they depict scenes of women being manhandled by a series of rather ugly brutes, characters from deep in Collot’s subconscious. In his standard bibliography of French erotic publications, Jean-Pierre Dutel describes them as ‘some of the best illustrations by this sometimes mediocre artist’. Only 110 sets of the prints were produced.
