This, the third of the 1936 Santippa portfolios, is an enigma in a different way – the plates are all signed ‘Santippa 936’ (presumably for 1936), but the work’s title is a series of question marks, one on the black and dark green cover, and no fewer than four on what passes for a title page.
The twelve plates (thirteen if we count the two-tone frontispiece) are typical Santippa, witty, well-drawn and composed, worth spending a little time with. We have again some of the themes of Le théâtre de la nature, including the elephant and the country bumpkins; it’s clear that whoever created this series very much enjoyed playing with their erotic ideas and taking everything to the humorous limit.
