Around the turn of the millennium Nicole Claveloux started exploring erotic themes in graphic paintings, often combining naturalistic settings with almost dissection-table sexual anatomy. Some resemble the doll graphics of Hans Bellmer, others mirror the Bodyscapes of Lynn Paula Russell. However you look at them, they are compelling, and a little disturbing.
Each of the paintings here has a title which may give insight into Claveloux’s thinking: ‘Le puy violent’ (The Violent Hill); ‘Roc des ombres’ (Rock of Shadows); ‘Estran’ (Foreshore); ‘Le trefle à quatre fesses’ (Four-leafed Clover); ‘Ouroboros’; and ‘Le jour et l’heure’ (The Day and the Time).
