When the Hungarian-born artist Marcel Vertès died in 1961, Székely created this fitting tribute portfolio to his long-time friend and fellow-traveller in the byways of erotic art.
The short tale of three young people meeting in a park and enjoying each other’s bodies is straightforward, and achieves a rare combination of one artist’s imagination created in the style of another, for Skékely has managed to follow Vertès’ trademark pen-and-wash style without it appearing in any way a pastiche. The style might be Vertès, but the narrative is pure Székely. An apt and humble testimonial.
