Sicher vor dem Sturm? (Safe from the Storm?) is a cautionary narrative, almost certainly a private commission, created by Schatz in the period after his return to Vienna. Mother and daughter take refuge in a wooden hut (is it a sauna maybe?) and take off their wet clothes to dry. A pair of hikers turn up, and seeing the naked women proceed to do what too many men believe to be natural and unavoidable. There is clearly no consent involved.
The theme of sexual violence seems to have been an important aspect of Otto Schatz’s post-internment art; whether that was to do with his own proclivities or the subjects requested by clients for his work we shall never know.
