Whether or not you believe Eric Fischl to be a good artist, there is no doubt that he has the rare ability to capture the texture and movement of naked bodies using the minimum of paint and – seemingly – effort.
This selection of Fischl sketches, mostly from the 1980s and 90s, demonstrate his technique of taking his sketchbook to the beaches near his Long Island home and quickly recording what he saw. Imagining the backstories and contexts of many of the encounters depicted makes for a fascinating reservoir of potential short stories.
