Pat Andrea’s magical realist artworks evoke themes of sexuality, fertility, fear and desire. In his art he depicts an ambiguous and troubled universe, often representing erotic female figures from his unconscious. Portraying dreams and visions, his paintings include uninhibited emotion, humour, and bleak detail. His works of art mimic life by juxtaposing magical realism with reality, provoking difficult reflection but often coupled with humour. The more you look, the more you see.
His use of mixed media, often combining coloured pencil, watercolour and gouache, reflects his willingness to use whatever medium his imagination suggests as the most appropriate way of depicting his artistic ideas.
‘The unconscious is the key to my subjects,’ Andrea wrote of a recent exhibition at the Strouk Gallery in Paris. ‘What I draw and paint is what I see when I open wide the doors of my unconsciousness. I’m an observer of human relationships, our social drives and urges. Artists are here to paint a world we cannot see, the world of ideas, the world of dreams, the things that do not exist. That’s our task.’
