In this sequence from the mid-1990s Giardini offers us a collection of bright pink devils indulging in the classical seven deadly sins. Also known as the capital vices or cardinal sins, they function within the teachings of Christianity as a way of controlling believers’ worst impulses. The classification of deadly sins into a group of seven originated with Tertullian, based on Greco-Roman and biblical antecedents. Later the concept of seven deadly sins evolved further, based on the historical context of the Roman Catholic Church, though with a significant influence from Greek and associated religious traditions.

Here are Giardini’s interpretations of sloth, avarice, gluttony, envy, wrath, lust and pride.
