L’odeur du bois (The Scent of Wood), 2011

This selection of paintings from the early 2010s show Foo experimenting with a growing repertoire of fantasy encounters with both clearly human and with strange, hairy, often headless creatures.

The presence of a gothic accent is something that often accompanies Foo’s body of work. His work uses suspense, unsettling imagery, and rural landscapes to create visual stories. These paintings can evoke deep feelings in the viewer. At its core, the central theme is concerned with penetration and the feeling of desire. The scenes pull the viewer into a celebration of the libido. This reveals Foo’s Dionysian nature, which is reflected in his appeal to intoxicate us.

Describing his creative process, Foo explains it as navigating a mental landscape, a forest of thoughts where images from his love life and reading materialise. This perspective on nature provides a sanctuary for those experiencing passionate love. The location fosters a dark, romantic, and erotic ambiance, yet beneath this surface the forest symbolises both the inherent violence within our nature and its hidden vitality, a truth we often forget – that we are all animals in the woods.
