Darwin Leon was born in Santiago de las Vegas, a small town near Havana in Cuba. In 1987, amid the political and economic crisis in Cuba, his family left for Spain before eventually settling in Miami, Florida. He studied at Miami International University of Art and Design, where he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2005. He was awarded the Visual Arts Scholarship Award of Excellence, and won Best in Show at his first juried student exhibition. Initially drawn to religious portraiture, he subsequently developed a more individual approach, combining figurative expressionism with surrealism, cubism, satire and irony.
Leon describes his style as ‘expressionistic surrealism’, bringing together classical painting techniques and an unconventional contemporary imagination. The influence of renaissance masters is evident in his use of chiaroscuro, the dramatic interplay of light and shadow, and his attention to the modelling of the human figure. These traditional foundations become the starting point for a world of distortion, exaggerated anatomy, incongruous juxtapositions and startling transformations.
Eroticism forms an important part of this imaginative territory. Leon’s bodies are exaggerated, fragmented, merged with other forms, placing explicit sexuality within elaborate symbolic or fantastical settings. His figures range from sensually idealised women to monstrous caricatures, with desire, vanity, power and vulnerability frequently entangled in the imagery, combining meticulous draughtsmanship with an exuberant, sometimes outrageous humour.
As Leon explains, ‘I believe in revising classical methods of art to create a more contemporary form of expression.’ He sees the human figure as a means of exploring the enduring motivations and contradictions of human nature, while using humour to make serious commentary accessible to his audience.
Alongside his artistic practice, Leon has taught drawing, painting and anatomy in Florida. His solo exhibitions include Fish Out of Water (2016), Darwin’s Metaphors (2018), and Elysium of Distorted Harmony (2024).
