This set of hand-coloured illustrations has appeared ‘in the flesh’ and online in various permutations, sometimes titled Grand Hotel Budapest, sometimes Plaisirs défendus (Forbidden Pleasures), most often without any title; we have gathered together all the scenes we have found from this joyfully sinful album.
The three dozen illustrations are mounted on grey or dark blue boards and bound loosely together without a title page or cover, so may well have been obtained singly or in sets. J.F. Launay has suggested that they date from the 1930s, but though the scenes are consistent with this dating the illustrations have much more in common with similar albums from the early 1950s. Another mystery to be solved.
