‘Le vrai croyant’ (The True Believer) is a good example of the several hundred Cinéma vertical cartoon strips created by Barbe in the 1970s and 80s. A simple story, simply told, of a Jesus figure climbing from a young woman’s chained pendant and descending via her cleavage into her knickers. ‘OK, j’me fait Carmelite’ translates as ‘Okay, I’ll become a nun’.
Barbe’s Cinéma strips were collected into three volumes by the French publisher Glénat, the most complete being their 1987 Cinémas et autres choses (Cinémas and Other Things). All three volumes are now out of print.
