At the Académie Julian von Hofmann would have been schooled in the rigorous techniques of drawing from studio models, and his skill as a draughtsman is evident from the many studies he made both in life drawing classes, and later as preparatory studies for his paintings.

We show here some of his studio drawings, together with book illustrations and preliminary studies for larger paintings.
