During the early years of the twentieth century many risqué erotic prints were sold in sets in small Parisian bookshops, often ‘sous le manteau’ or ‘under the shelf’. Most of these examples bear Mouton’s signature, some printed examples also having his trademark sheep motif, ‘mouton’ being the French word for sheep. Some have handwritten titles, and tellingly some also have (bad) English translations, suggesting that their clientele was sometimes English gentlemen taking the opportunity to acquire such rarities, unavailable at home, while visiting Gay Paree.
