Dévergondage à l’est (Debauchery in the East) is the second of three albums in Berteloot’s Voyages-voyages series, following La dragueuse des sleeping (The Sleeping-Car Siren, 1988) and preceding Les voluptés de l'Orient Express (The Delights of the Orient Express, 1989). The series grew out of stories Berteloot was contributing to Bédé Adult’, the French erotic comics magazine published by CAP. When Berteloot began working on Voyages-voyages, Bédé Adult’ was still predominantly a black-and-white publication, although colour was gradually becoming more common. The first Voyages-voyages stories consequently appeared in black and white, and the three albums retained that treatment.
This second volume journey takes its protagonists eastwards to Budapest, Prague, Moscow and Berlin, where the promise of unfamiliar places becomes an excuse for increasingly uninhibited encounters. Rather than following a single extended narrative, the four episodes form a series of loosely connected adventures, with travel providing a framework for erotic encounters and opportunities for seduction. The unfamiliarity of the cities adds an element of adventure, while using each location as a playground for Berteloot’s characters gives the album a sense of constant movement and discovery.
Dévergondage à l’est is an important early example of Berteloot’s work under his Hugdebert pseudonym. Together with Les reines rouges, it shows him establishing the distinctive combination of eroticism, humour, adventure and imaginative settings that would characterise much of his subsequent work.
Dévergondage à l’est was published by CAP as a Bédé adult’ album.
