Cupid, Iliana Ivanova, after William Bouguereau

Ohé! Cupidon (Hey! Cupid) is Series 60 of the La Librairie de L’estampe colour postcard sets, probably first published in 1916 and on sale throughout the 1920s.

In classical mythology Cupid was the god of desire, erotic love, attraction and affection, affirming that love conquers all. It was in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century that Cupid with his little bow and arrow was tamed into a mischievous sweet little boy with wings who just wants to help Valentine’s Day lovers to get to know each other better.

By the time Suzanne Meunier was commissioned to produce a suite of helpful Cupids assisting the mademoiselles of Paris in their toilettes, Cupid had become fully domesticated.
