In 2007 Phillip Dvorak produced one of his few specifically themed series of drawings, having visited the Mexican town of Mexicali on the US–Mexican border. His ‘Mexicali Compositions’ combine the elements associated with much of his art – the naked human body and its sexual components – with the symbolism of a border associated with pain and death, hence the barbed wire and skulls.
