I’m Grateful! was originally published in one of the last issues of Weirdo magazine, ten years into Crumb’s marriage with Aline and when daughter Sophie was seven years old; three years later the family would move to France and enter a calmer, more settled existence. Crumb drew this strip to demonstrate that he appreciated these and other gifts, and was not just the ‘whiney, complaining malcontent’ some of his readers might imagine. I’m Grateful! includes the classic page showing the ‘amazing women I have known’, nearly but not quite forgetting his wife Aline.
I’m Grateful! was reprinted in the 1992 Last Gasp collection My Troubles with Women.
