In 2006 Alexander Shappo held a personal exhibition titled Ecce Femina at the Museum of Modern Fine Art in Minsk, Belarus, which gives us the title for this portfolio. Consisting almost entirely of colour lithographs, he is clearly engrossed in the exploration of the naked human form, and often in explicitly sexual engagement.
Shappo’s work is deeply influenced by his personal experiences and interactions with the world around him. He seeks to reveal universal existential meanings through everyday events and human images, often infusing his art with elements of lyrical narration and a profound interest in cultural history. His art serves as a medium to express his philosophical contemplations on human nature, blending the ordinary with the timeless. The themes of love, life and passion prevail, captured in works which use a combination of simple lines, clever juxtapositions of bodies and objects, and subtle colour arrangements to create artworks which engage the viewer’s imagination.
